Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has alleged that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara openly acknowledged that he would have faced impeachment if President Bola Tinubu had not declared a state of emergency and installed a sole administrator in the state.

Speaking during a media briefing covered by TVC, Wike revealed what he described as the governor’s candid admission about the federal intervention that prevented his removal from office. “The governor has not come to tell you here that he’s not comfortable with what has happened. The governor said if the president did not declare a state of emergency, then he would have been impeached,” Wike stated.

The FCT Minister interpreted this alleged statement as evidence of Fubara’s acceptance of the current political arrangement. “So, what does he tell you? He’s saying that I’m comfortable with what happened, so that we would all have made peace, and by that time, we will all work as a team,” Wike explained.

Wike defended the measured approach to resolving the Rivers State political crisis, warning against rushing the reconciliation process. “Do you want to rush the peace process just because you want the governor to return, and at the end of the day, you have not made any peace? And today, that step is taken to restore democratic governance, at least in the local level,” the minister noted.

Addressing speculation about cross-party arrangements in upcoming Rivers State local government elections, Wike neither confirmed nor denied reports that the PDP might select candidates with APC deputies. “Why not be patient for RSIEC to publish those who are participating?” he responded when questioned about the alleged arrangement.

Rather than rejecting the idea of inter-party collaboration, Wike appeared to welcome such possibilities as a path to peace in the state. “However, what is wrong with an alliance that will bring peace in a state, assuming without conceding? Assuming that is even the arrangement, would you not be happy that for once, politicians can sit to say, ‘Look, let us work together; this is our state, and all of us are from here. Although I’m not aware of that arrangement, but would you not even be happy that this is taking place, and to advise other states to emulate it?” he asked.
