A publication by The Punch on Monday, August 25, 2025, revealed that the people of Igboukwu in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State, were thrown into shock after young residents uncovered a disturbing case of domestic imprisonment that had gone on for nearly five years. The situation became known when suspicious noises were traced to an isolated hut, where community members stumbled upon a young man in his mid-twenties chained and locked up by his own father.
The victim, whose name was given as Chogbo, popularly called Agudo, had not been seen in the community since 2021. Locals had assumed he had traveled overseas in search of greener pastures. However, their assumptions were shattered when rescuers forced their way into the small structure and discovered him in a severely weakened state, bound with corroded iron chains. The locks had to be broken because the keys could no longer function.
According to one of those who took part in the rescue, the young man confessed that he had been held captive since 2021. His narration revealed years of total seclusion, where he endured harsh conditions, lack of proper food, and absence of basic hygiene throughout his ordeal.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command announced that the man had been freed and was receiving urgent medical and psychological treatment. Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the case was under thorough investigation, while Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, applauded the vigilance of the youths who exposed the crime. He further assured that the culprits would be prosecuted for what the authorities have described as an inhumane and degrading act.
Hear him speak: “The victim has been rescued and is receiving necessary medical care. The father told us he travelled to Europe, not knowing that our brother was locked up in a hut for five years without taking his bath. This is barbaric.”
