Hakeem Baba Ahmed, former Special Adviser to President Tinubu, has stated that Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who was killed in 1966, only owned one house when he died. He also said that Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, left behind just one house as well.

In an interview with Political Advantage Platform, Ahmed said that many ministers from Northern Nigeria who were living in Lagos at the time of the 1966 military coup did not have enough money to take their families back home after the government was overthrown. He said they had to borrow money just to transport their families to the North. He said this showed that they didn’t steal public funds and only lived on their salaries.

In Ahmed’s words: “The prime minister of Nigeria, Mr Abubakar Tafawa Balewa who was murdered in 1966 left one house. Sir Ahmadu Bello, this Sardauna that you hear, who was murdered in 1966 left one house. A lot of the ministers after the coup in 1966, northern ministers in Lagos, didn’t have enough money to move their families from Lagos after the government was overthrown, they had to borrow money to bring their families to the north”
