The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph Hayab, has called on the federal government to include questions on religion and language in future population counts, during an interview with The Sun on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
Rev. Hayab said Nigerians must be properly identified for who they are.
He explained that many people are often wrongly labeled because of their location.
According to him, being from the North does not automatically make someone Hausa or Muslim.
He noted that he is Ham by tribe and a Christian.
He stressed that such identities must be captured in official records.
He insisted that Nigeria can only move forward when every tribe and religion is acknowledged.
Rev. Hayab said that Southern Kaduna and other minority groups are not afraid of being counted.
He argued that a fair census with details of tribe and religion will expose the truth about Nigeria’s population.
He urged the government to act sincerely and ensure that the next head count reflects the reality of the people.
He said this will help promote justice, unity, and equal treatment.
”Someone shouldn’t call me Hausa or I’m just a northerner because I’m from North, no; I’m Ham by tribe, and I’m a Christian. There are villages in Kano State that have no one single mosque, and many Nigerians don’t know that?” he said. See, More, Here>>>>
