His Royal Highness, Mujahid Asari Dokubo, the Amayanabo of Torusarama Piri (Elem Kalabari) in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State and a former militant leader, has spoken about perceptions surrounding Muslims from Rivers State.
Dokubo made the remarks during a live video from 16:22 broadcast on his official Facebook page on Friday, March 13, 2026, where he shared an experience involving his son while discussing how people often react to Muslim names and identities.
During the broadcast, Dokubo narrated an encounter involving his son, whom he said is currently in Turkey playing basketball, explaining how people reacted after learning his name and nationality. “Somebody will meet my son in Turkey. He is playing basketball. Somebody just meet him, explain the exchange pleasantries as a Muslim,” he said.
According to him, the interaction took a different turn after the person learned his son’s name. “The next thing the person think of is to speak English to him, is to speak Hausa to him, because his name is Usamah bin Mujahid,” Dokubo said.
He added that the individual then asked his son about his country of origin. “They ask which part of Africa did he come from, and he said Nigeria. The next thing they do immediately is to speak Hausa to him,” he said.
Dokubo explained that when his son clarified that he was not Hausa, the person continued to ask questions about his background. “If he tells them he is not Hausa, they say, Oh, are you Yoruba?” he stated.
He further said that when his son responded that he is from the Ijaw ethnic group, the individual asked additional questions about the origin. “If he tells them no, that he is from Ijaw, they will say, What is Ijaw? He will tell them a river state,” Dokubo said.
According to him, the reaction continued with surprise from the individual regarding the presence of Muslims in Rivers State: “Then they will now ask, Are there Muslims in Rivers state? They now show some sort of surprise saying, Are there Muslims in Rivers state? Yes, there are Muslims in river state.” Read_More…
