Former Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has criticized the public outcry against the defection of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, specifically aiming at the indignation expressed by the Labour Party (LP).

Sani’s commentary was a direct reaction to the statement made by Peter Obi, following the defection of Governor Mbah.

Sani’s post addressed the core of the Labour Party’s grievance, questioning why a member of the LP should be angry with a former PDP member moving to the APC.

The crux of his argument was that the Labour Party itself was largely populated by individuals who had previously and voluntarily migrated from the PDP.

He argued that to condemn a current defection was hypocritical given their own political background.

He used a vivid analogy to drive his point home, comparing the political movements to separate migrations.

He suggested that LP members “left Africa to Syria” and were now criticizing those who “left Africa to Spain.”

Sani emphasized that the LP members had “seen the vision” and left the PDP first, claiming the current defectors were simply following that precedent.

Sani wrote, ‘WHY should a man in LP be angry with a man from PDP who moved to APC ? When you knew that most of the People in LP were people who voluntarily migrated from PDP or were forced to leave the PDP. You left Africa to Syria and they left Africa to Spain. You are in Syria and you are angry they left to Spain. You saw the vision and left and they trailed your footsteps. The defectors only divorced the wife you once divorced.”

This public stance by Sani came after Peter Obi, a prominent LP leader and former presidential candidate, had weighed in on Governor Mbah’s move to APC.

Obi had dismissed claims that such move amount to a political takeover of regions like the South-East.

While acknowledging that governors like Peter Mbah may have personal political reasons for their decisions, Obi emphasized that such moves do not necessarily reflect the broader will of the people in their states.

He urged public officials to focus on performance and addressing citizens’ needs rather than relying on political realignments to secure votes.

Sani’s retort, however, sought to diminish the political outrage by framing defection as a cyclical and undeniable reality in Nigerian politics, particularly when viewed from the perspective of a party whose foundation was built upon similar exits from a previous political home See, More, Here>>>
