Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has defended Nigeria’s decision to offer scholarships to students from St. Lucia, despite criticism from some Nigerians who believe the country should focus solely on its internal challenges.

In a post on his verified Twitter account, Sani addressed concerns raised by citizens questioning the government’s decision to extend educational support to a foreign country amid Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

“When Nigeria offers scholarships for St. Lucia students to study in Nigeria, I read comments from people who think we should not give because we have our problems,” Sani wrote. “They need to be enlightened that all the countries that give aid, grants, and scholarships to Nigerians also have their problems, but they chose to give.”

The former lawmaker explained that offering help to others is not necessarily because a country is without problems, but because it is a demonstration of humanity, solidarity, and international brotherhood.

“You don’t help others only when you don’t have problems. You help others because it’s human or brotherly to help,” he added. Sani further cited Cuba as an example of this principle, noting that despite being under economic sanctions for over 60 years, the country has continued to offer scholarships to Nigerian students.

His remarks come in response to the backlash that followed the recent announcement of scholarships for St. Lucia students, with some Nigerians arguing that such funds should be used to improve education and welfare domestically.
