Prominent Nigerian senator and human rights activist Shehu Sani has ignited a fresh debate on social media with a scathing critique of UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch. The controversy stems from Badenoch’s recent assertion that her children cannot obtain Nigerian citizenship due to her gender, a claim she used to underscore her push for stricter UK immigration policies. Sani, known for his outspoken stance on national pride and governance, took to X early Monday morning to challenge her narrative.

In a post, Sani wrote, “Why should Kemi Badenoch be bothered about getting a Nigerian citizenship for her offspring from a country she rebuked and rejected?… She should just enjoy her adopted home and leave us alone in our father’s home.” His remarks is said to reflect growing frustration among some Nigerians over Badenoch’s perceived disavowal of her heritage. Born in the UK to Nigerian parents in 1980, Badenoch spent much of her early life in Nigeria before returning to the UK at 16, a detail highlighted in recent Pulse Nigeria reports.

Badenoch’s claim hinges on a misinterpretation of Section 25(1)(c) of the Nigerian Constitution, as reported by Nigerian Tribune which grants citizenship by birth to children of Nigerian parents regardless of the parent’s gender. Legal experts have clarified that her children, through her Nigerian lineage, are eligible for citizenship, contradicting her statement. This is said to have fueled accusations of political posturing, especially as she advocates for a “zero tolerance” immigration policy in the UK, as noted in her January 2025 speech.
