Shehu Mahdi has expressed strong disapproval following the conferment of a chieftaincy title on President Bola Tinubu by traditional rulers in Anambra State. Reacting to the development, Mahdi took to social media, accusing Igbo leaders of hypocrisy and betrayal. He wrote:

“Ndigbo & their brand of hypocrisy.

How will Obi and obedients feal with this ‘CULTURAL Assault’? Ndigbo!!!!!. You are your own enemies. Tomorrow you will start to abuse those who don’t support Obi when your elders have sold all your chances out. Ndigbo! Ndigbo! Ndigbo! No pity”

The title, “Dike si mba Anambra,” meaning “Hero from outside Anambra,” was given to Tinubu during his visit to the state on Thursday. The president was in Anambra on a one-day working trip to commission key infrastructure projects completed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration. The ceremony took place at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka and was led by Igwe Chidubem Iweka, Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, alongside monarchs from the state’s 179 communities.

Mahdi’s reaction has triggered mixed feelings online, especially among supporters of Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential contender. Some critics of the move believe the traditional rulers disrespected the political sentiments of the South-East, a region that largely backed Obi during the election. Others, however, argue that the honour was purely cultural and unrelated to politics.

The incident has reopened conversations about unity and representation within the South-East. For many, it underscores the internal conflicts that continue to affect the region’s political direction. While some see Tinubu’s recognition as a gesture of inclusion, Mahdi’s comments suggest deep-rooted frustrations remain unresolved.
