A young Nigerian lady from Ebonyi State has recounted her harrowing experience working as a house help in Lagos.

During an emotional interview on the Adult Gist Podcast 14:32, she described the abuse and mistreatment she endured at the hands of her madam.

Sharing her ordeal, she said, “Anytime I told someone to please help me beg her to take me home, when the person tried to approach her, she would make enemies with that person. She would then come inside and start beating me.”

According to her, the abuse was both physical and emotional.

She revealed that her only moments of relief came when the husband of her employer returned from work.

“When the husband comes back, that’s when I will start wearing good clothes and eating alongside the children,” she added.

One of the most painful memories she recalled was being forced to stay awake through the night just to ensure the children were comfortable.

“Sometimes, when there is no light, I’ll kneel down from night to morning and fan the children so they will not feel heat,” she revealed.

Her story adds to the growing number of cases of domestic abuse faced by domestic workers in Nigeria.

Many, especially young girls from poor backgrounds, suffer in silence due to fear, stigma, or lack of support.
