Ali Ndume, Senator Representing Borno South Senatorial District in the National Assembly
Senator Ali Ndume has criticized recent political developments in Delta State, particularly the decision by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to recognize Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, a recent defector from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the leader of the party in the state.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Ndume expressed disappointment over what he sees as a disregard for loyal party members who have remained committed to the APC, even in difficult times.
“In Delta, my distinguished colleague Omo-Agege, after losing an election which he thinks he won, struggled in court and then kept the party going. Then, all of a sudden, they brought in the sitting governor and said he is going to be the leader. What has that man done?” Ndume questioned.
Ndume’s comments highlight the treatment of long-standing party members who have invested their political capital in building the party’s presence in opposition strongholds.
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the former Deputy Senate President and the APC’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate in Delta, was seen as the face of the party in the state.
After a narrow and contested loss in the 2023 elections, Omo-Agege challenged the outcome in court and continued to steer the party’s affairs locally.
However, the political tide appeared to shift on April 23, 2025, following Governor Oborevwori’s defection to the APC, along with several PDP leaders in Delta State.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development and a prominent APC figure from Delta, welcomed Oborevwori into the party, declaring him the new leader of the APC in the state.
Speaking during a meeting with the governor days after his defection, Keyamo said the party’s structure in Delta was now fully under Oborevwori’s control.
