Former Minister of Works and ex-lawmaker, Adeseye Ogunlewe, has attributed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent confrontation in the Senate to her lack of experience in parliamentary procedures.
The controversy arose after Senator Natasha protested the reassignment of her seat in the Senate chamber. Her insistence on speaking from her previous seat led to a clash with the Senate leadership, ultimately resulting in her being denied the opportunity to speak.
Ogunlewe, speaking on Arise TV News from 8:08, stressed the importance of order in the Senate and proper adherence to procedural rules. He noted that the senator’s response to the situation contributed to the embarrassment she faced, adding that a better understanding of parliamentary rules could have helped her handle the situation more effectively.
He also addressed the issue of Order 10, which allows senators to raise points of privilege during proceedings. While acknowledging its significance, he emphasized that it must be invoked under the right circumstances.
In his words; “There must be order in the Senate. Out of inexperience, she exposed herself to that level of embarrassment. Normally, what she should have done was to run quickly to the seat and continue. But when you insist on talking from a seat not allocated to you, I think the Senate President has the right to debar her from talking. But that Section 10 is so crucial that under any condition, if anybody raises that order, you must listen to the senator—but not when you are not properly seated. She should have just gone back to her seat and talked.”
