A brewing political storm has erupted in Nigeria as the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Orders the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to seal the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of the country’s major opposition parties as report by Daily Trust. The move has drawn sharp criticism from political figures, with Senator Shehu Sani leading the charge, warning of severe implications for Nigeria’s democratic image on the global stage.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, May 25, 2025, Senator Sani, a former lawmaker and human rights activist, urged the FCDA to reconsider its decision. “The PDP secretariat should not be sealed by the FCDA; doing that has global implications for the image of the country,” Sani wrote. He argued that the PDP, a dominant political force from 1999 until 2015, should be granted additional time to resolve any discrepancies in its property documentation. The FCDA’s action is believed to stem from unresolved legal or administrative issues concerning the PDP’s headquarters in Abuja.

The threat has reignited concerns about Nigeria’s democratic health, particularly as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has maintained a firm grip on power since 2015. As reported by Daily Trust, This is not the first time the FCDA has targeted PDP properties. In 2013, the agency marked a PDP faction’s office for demolition over similar disputes, a move seen as politically motivated. Political analysts point to a broader pattern of using bureaucratic measures to suppress opposition parties, a trend that has intensified amid the APC’s dominance.
