Segun Showunmi, who used to be a governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, is defending Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), against accusations made by Nasir El-Rufai about mischief within the party. Showunmi said that no one, not even El-Rufai, can stop Wike from talking to whoever he wants. He called the complaints against him unnecessary.

In an interview with Trust TV, Showunmi reacted to El-Rufai’s claim that soldiers in the PDP are trying to cause problems for the party. Showunmi believes that it’s not fair to keep blaming Wike for the party’s problems almost two years after the 2023 election, even though the attention has turned to him.

He said it was time to stop criticising and to focus on fixing the party’s problems without blaming anyone. Showunmi pointed out that it is wrong to concentrate on Wike’s deeds, especially given how much time has passed since the last election. He said it’s unfair and unhelpful to keep blaming Wike for the party’s problems long after the election.

Showunmi asked a clear question: Would soldiers have gotten into the PDP if El-Rufai had stayed in the party? He believes that these ideas about Wike’s role in the party’s problems don’t really tackle the main issues causing the party’s struggles.

Showunmi said that people, especially Wike, should be able to talk to anyone they want without worrying about being judged. He made it clear that no one has the right to decide how Wike should associate with others or to keep blaming him for the party’s larger problems.

Showunmi believes that the PDP should focus on improving itself instead of just thinking about past leaders if it wants to make progress. In response to El-Rufai’s worries, Showunmi talked about why El-Rufai left the PDP and wondered if his departure played a role in the supposed rise of soldiers in the party.

He asked, “I really like Nasir, but if you ask him what made him leave the PDP and become the minister of FCT, what would he say?” If he had stuck with the PDP, would there be hired soldiers to do this? He has made a statement based on certain beliefs.
