John Hayab, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the North, has spoken out against the decision by some northern governors to shut down schools for Ramadan. He expressed concerns that this move could set the region back educationally.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with TV360 Nigeria, Hayab said that even in Islamic nations like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran, schools remain open during Ramadan. He shared that after hearing about the closure of some schools in the north, he contacted someone in Saudi Arabia who confirmed that their children had just left for school.
In Hayab’s words: “Saudi Arabia is an Islamic country, United Arab Emirates is an Islamic country and Iran is an Islamic country, their schools are in session now. We had to put a call across to Saudi Arabia and one person there said ‘my children just went to school’. Are we more Muslims than them? Let us be honest to ourselves, let us not drag our community backward”
