Renowned publisher and former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, said the party had succumbed to blackmail by zoning its presidential ticket to the South.
According to The Sun, PDP’s zoning decision ahead of the 2027 elections stirred reactions, with Momodu insisting that the party had shot itself in the leg. Speaking through his Instagram handle, he described the move as the most reckless decision in the history of Nigeria’s nascent democracy.
He alleged that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike was involved in the development and further claimed that President Bola Tinubu would eventually become the joint candidate of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP in 2027.
Momodu remarked that one of Africa’s biggest but seriously embattled political parties had effectively shot itself in the leg by choosing to hide behind one finger. He stated that the PDP had succumbed to what he called the cheap and puerile blackmail of black sheep within the opposition who were openly working for the ruling party.
He added that the shameful part of the decision was watching supposedly seasoned politicians engage in self-praise for what he considered the most reckless step in the history of Nigeria’s democracy by zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.
According to him, the deliberate pretence was sheer deceit, as everyone knew that the hand behind it was Wike’s while the voice was Tinubu’s, and that their game plan was no secret. He stressed that Wike continued to issue orders to helpless governors who were too fearful to resist what he called daredevil dictatorship, pointing out that they could not even rescue one of their prominent members in Rivers State, Governor Sim Fubara, when his administration ran into crisis.
Further talking, he said, “The same man that threw out zoning in 2022, and even lobbied to be Vice-President of a Northern candidate, is the one now crying loudest that power must be ceded to the South in 2027.
“The geniuses should be courageous enough to admit that TINUBU will be the joint candidate of All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party in 2027. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Give it to Wike, love him or loathe him, you will always know where he stands, no matter how preposterous and ludicrous.”
