According to a report by Aljazeera News on Thursday 3, 2025, a high-ranking Russian naval officer has been killed in a Ukrainian strike on the western Russian city of Kursk, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The official identified the victim as Vice Admiral Oleg Ryzhkov, deputy head of the Russian Navy.
Ryzhkov reportedly died following a precision strike carried out by Ukrainian forces using long-range drones.
The attack occurred late Tuesday night and targeted a military installation in the Kursk region, about 90 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Moscow confirmed the death early Wednesday, Russian state media broadcast images of the aftermath, showing heavily damaged infrastructure and black smoke rising from the site.
“This is a serious blow not only to the Russian Navy but to the entire armed forces, a Russian military spokesperson stated.
“The Ukrainian regime continues to pursue acts of terror deep within Russian territory.
Ukraine has not officially commented on the operation, but the strike is widely seen as part of Kyiv’s increasing effort to bring the war to Russian soil amid ongoing fighting in eastern and southern Ukraine.
The Kremlin has vowed a proportional response, while local authorities in Kursk have heightened security measures.
Russia has already launched multiple missile attacks on Ukrainian cities in retaliation for recent cross-border strikes.
“This is war, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. “Ukraine wants escalation and they will get one.
Vice Admiral Ryzhkov was one of the most senior military figures to be killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
His death marks a significant moment in a conflict that has increasingly moved beyond Ukraine’s borders.
