Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov sharply criticized Israel’s recent airstrike on Doha, Qatar, describing it as a deliberate attempt to undermine peace efforts and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. According to a report by Anadolu Agency, speaking at the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council Strategic Dialogue session in Sochi on Thursday, September 11, 2025, Lavrov warned that the attack, which occurred on September 9, threatens to further destabilize the Middle East.

The Israeli military’s strike targeted senior Hamas leaders in Doha, who were reportedly engaged in ceasefire negotiations. The operation, described by Israel as a “precise strike,” took place during discussions on a U.S.-proposed Gaza truce and prisoner exchange, according to Hamas. Lavrov condemned the attack as a “gross violation of international law, including the UN Charter,” and an assault on Qatar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized that such actions risk escalating tensions across the region.

Lavrov highlighted Qatar’s critical role as a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, noting its efforts to broker indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a Gaza ceasefire. “The cynicism of this attack lies in targeting a key mediator working tirelessly to end the conflict,” he stated. He accused Israel of undermining international efforts to secure peace, asserting that the strike demonstrates an unwillingness to address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the West Bank. Lavrov further claimed that Israel’s actions reflect a broader intent to sabotage prospects for establishing a Palestinian state.

The attack has drawn international concern, with Russia expressing “deep concern” over its implications. Lavrov argued that Israel’s military actions not only hinder ceasefire talks but also signal a disregard for diplomatic solutions.
