Tension is rising in Rivers State as the Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC) has threatened to stop oil production in the region, giving President Bola Tinubu a seven-day ultimatum to meet their demands or face serious disruptions, as reported by PUNCH.
The youth council is calling for the restoration of Rivers State’s statutory revenue allocation.
They also want an end to the impeachment threats against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Another key demand is a public apology for alleged anti-Ijaw statements made by former Governor Nyesom Wike.
According to the NDYC, the federal government has empowered Wike and the judiciary to undermine the Ijaw people.
They believe attempts to impeach the governor and withhold state funds are deliberate actions to weaken the region.
The group has described Wike’s alleged comments about the Ijaws as offensive and unacceptable.
The NDYC insists that the Niger Delta is critical to Nigeria’s economy because of its oil production.
They argue that their region has long been exploited and will no longer tolerate disrespect or economic marginalization.
The group has instructed its members to prepare for action if their demands are ignored.
They have warned that shutting down oil production would have a devastating impact on Nigeria’s economy.
“Failure to comply could lead to a total shutdown of oil production across the region, a move that would have dire consequences for Nigeria’s already fragile economy. We are ready to shock the world in seven days,” they said.
