In an interview with Arise News, ARISE Analyst Mahmud Jega dissected the unfolding political crisis in Rivers State, emphasizing that the State House of Assembly is deliberately creating obstacles to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara. With 27 out of 35 lawmakers reportedly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, the Assembly has the numerical strength to remove the governor. By blocking the budget presentation and adjourning indefinitely, they have set the stage for a financial deadlock, which could be used as grounds for impeachment.
Beyond having the numbers, Jega explained that the final hurdle in the impeachment process is the Chief Judge, who is responsible for constituting a panel to investigate the charges against the governor. If the panel clears Fubara of wrongdoing, the impeachment proceedings must be dropped and cannot be revived within the life of the current Assembly. This, according to Jega, is why the Assembly is also targeting the Chief Judge, fearing that an unfavorable panel ruling could permanently derail their impeachment efforts.
“They’re setting a trap and more than that, they have the numbers to impeach him. 27 out of I think 35 or so. They have the overwhelming number. The remaining obstacle in the impeachment process is the Chief Judge because when you pass an impeachment resolution, you send it to the Chief Judge to constitute the panel that will investigate the petition, and if the panel returns a not guilty verdict, then you must drop the impeachment charge and you cannot raise it again within the life of the current Assembly… That is what the Rivers State Assembly is afraid of, which is why they’re also going after the Chief Judge,” Jega stated.
