The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has reportedly locked up the commission’s offices and instructed staff not to receive any letters from the Rivers State House of Assembly.
This action follows a summons from the House of Assembly, demanding the Chairman and all RSIEC Commissioners appear before the legislators to answer questions regarding their conduct in office.
Despite the Chairman’s efforts to block communication, the letter of summons was successfully delivered to him. In a viral video by Port Harcourt Force, RSIEC staff were seen dragging with Assembly staff, refusing to collect the letter.
The House had invited the RSIEC leadership after the Supreme Court, in Suit No. SC/CV/1105/2024, nullified the Local Government elections held on October 5, 2024, citing the Commission’s defiance of a subsisting High Court order.
The RSIEC Chairman and his Commissioners have been directed to appear before the House on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Hallowed Chamber, Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters, Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
The Rivers State House of Assembly, in exercising its oversight and investigative powers under Section 128 of the 1999 Constitution, insists that they must present all relevant documents, particularly regarding the alleged misuse of funds without an Appropriation Law from January 1, 2024, to date.
Failure to comply with this summons may result in the House issuing a warrant of arrest or invoking its constitutional powers under Section 129 of the 1999 Constitution.
