Senator Henry Seriake has stated that he doubts the National Assembly will approve the state of emergency declared by President Tinubu in Rivers State.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV from 17:27, Seriake explained that for it to be approved, two-thirds of the National Assembly must support it. He said in the House of Representatives, that means 240 members must support it, while in the Senate, 73 senators must back it.
However, Seriake said some lawmakers, including himself, are strongly against it because they believe in protecting democracy, the constitution, and the rights of the people of Rivers State.
In Seriake’s words: “In the case of the House of Reps, 240 members. In the case of the Nigerian Senate where I am a member, 73 of us will have to agree. And some of us, as I have said for ideological consistency in defence of the democracy of our country, in defence of the constitution and in defence of the sovereignty of the people of Rivers State, we are ideologically opposed to it”
