The immediate past Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State, Enyiada Cookey-Gam, has, during an interview on The Morning Brief from 22:47, a Channels Television Programme, maintained that he vacated Office by midnight as provided for by the constitution, because he would not be part of those who are seeking to add to their tenures.
The former Chairman had said, “Well, let me frankly say that we were sworn in in office, and that three years in Office has elapsed, and I will not indulge myself into any form of impunity by extending the power given to me by my people. The law of Local Government, like we said, Section 9 of that law says that the Local Government tenure is for three years, and therefore I shouldn’t be part of those who want to add extra years; it is it is unacceptable. Yes, that can be seen from that perspective, but in other words, I want to be distinguished out for whatever thing they have claimed they want to have within and outside the three years of Office. So because like I said before, the law is sacrosanct, which is provided by the Local Government Law that the tenure of elected Chairmen and their other Councillors shall be for three years.”…..Sée Móre
