U.S. President Donald Trump informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu face-to-face that attacking the Hamas leadership in Qatar was a bad idea. The group is a nationalist Sunni Islamist political organisation.

A senior official of President Trump’s administration detailed a tense and heated phone call between the American president and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, immediately following the controversial attack that had caused mixed reactions through the Middle East and European countries, according to a report by the Jerusalem Post on Thursday, September 11, 2025, a prominent American media outlet.

The call took place immediately after the attack. According to the senior American official, during the phone call with the two leaders, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified his decision to target the Hamas leadership in Doha, saying that he was only given a short window of opportunity to do so and felt forced to act.

But even though Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, justified his offensive military strike in Qatar’s capital Doha, President Trump, USA, said that the decision was unilateral and does not advance American or Israeli goals.

This marked a rare public separation of American government goals from those of its top ally in the region, and Trump emphasised that Netanyahu alone made the move.

Relatedly, in a post on his official X account, President Trump stated that the attack in Doha against the Hamas leadership was an unofficial decision by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and not authorised by either the US government or himself.

As an additional expression of his discontent with the way events transpired, he bemoaned the fact that the alert on the Israeli attack arrived too late to halt the attack.
