Former presidential aide and social commentator, Reno Omokri, has criticized former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over his recent interview on Channels Television. In a lengthy post on his verified X account on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Omokri described the interview as “painful,” while expressing concern about El-Rufai’s cognitive state.
“Watching Nasir el-Rufai’s Interview Was Painful. His Intellect Has Seriously Deteriorated. I Felt Sorry For Him,” Omokri wrote. According to him, the former governor had gone into the interview hoping to damage the reputation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but only ended up diminishing his own public image.
“Nasir el-Rufai’s interview was neither as bombastic nor as damaging as he expected it to be. He went to the Channels Television studio expecting to damage Asiwaju, but he only ended up destroying his own mystique,” Omokri stated.
The former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan further noted that El-Rufai struggled to express his thoughts clearly during the session. “He could not marshal his points, and the interview itself has not trended as one would have expected,” he said.
Highlighting the lack of public interest in the broadcast, Omokri compared the interview’s reach with that of entertainment content. “To put things in perspective, an hour after Channels TV posted excerpts of his interview on X, the post had only garnered 17,000 views. BBNaija gets that in 3 minutes,” Omokri noted.
He argued that El-Rufai’s relevance has waned significantly. “The fellow still has limited nuisance value capacity, but it is seriously curtailed,” Omokri remarked. Omokri further compared El-Rufai’s current disposition to his persona five years ago, citing a sharp decline.
“If you consider the Nasir el-Rufai of say five years ago to the man we saw today, there is obviously a marked difference. There is an apparent cognitive decline and his once famous ‘I don’t care’ attitude has vanished. It has been replaced by a slow motion version of the gadfly we once knew,” he observed.
The critic said the former governor appeared visibly weakened. “He looked fatigued and defeated. His past quick wittedness and wry humour are gone. He hesitated so much in his sentences,” Omokri said. Offering possible reasons, he added: “It may be that the recent by-elections hit him harder than the public had imagined, or perhaps the man is just tired. He cannot even get his own first son, Bello, to join his sinking boat of a party (ADC). The young man was at the venue where President Tinubu was endorsed for a second term.”
Omokri concluded by insisting that the interview did not achieve its objective. “Whichever way you look at it, the interview failed to gain traction or achieve his intended purpose,” he said. “In my view, diminishing returns have set in, and his political influence will keep ebbing until it dies a natural death,” Omokri declared.
