Lawyer and one of the members of the Labour Party, Kenneth Okonkwo has reacted after the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to all the Local Government Areas In the country.
According to Channels TV, the Apex court has ordered the Federal Government to immediately start the direct payment of Local Government funds to the latter’s exclusive accounts. The court directed that local government allocations from the federation account should be paid directly to them henceforth, and not to state government coffers.
In the post that Kenneth Okonkwo shared on his official X handle on Thursday, he said the judgement of the Supreme Court is commendable but without political autonomy where the people, and not the governors, will select who will represent them at the local government level, the theft of local government funds by the governors won’t stop.

“The Supreme Court judgement that granted fiscal autonomy to local governments is commendable. However, without a commensurate grant of political autonomy, where the people, and not the governors, will democratically decide who will lead them at the local govt level, the theft of local government funds by the governors will not stop. Efforts must be made to scrap the SIEC and empower the INEC to organise all elections”.
