The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, warning that the nation’s future is at risk if decisive action is not taken.
In a post on his X handle, Obi described insecurity as an existential crisis that continues to cripple livelihoods, displace families, and weaken the country’s economic potential.
He noted that insecurity is now so pervasive that moving forward as a nation has become extremely difficult without first addressing it.
He lamented that incidents of killings, kidnappings, and banditry remain on the rise across Nigeria, adding that the government’s failure to adequately protect citizens has emboldened criminal groups.
Amnesty International had earlier warned of this “stunning failure,” which Obi said has worsened the situation over the past two years.
Highlighting the economic consequences, Obi said investors are fleeing the country, local businesses are collapsing, and farmers and traders can no longer operate freely.
He added that insecurity has also deepened Nigeria’s education crisis by preventing millions of children from attending school.
“According to the Global Terrorism Index, Nigeria ranks among the 10 most terrorised nations in the world,” Obi stated, stressing that urgent investment in security is critical for stability and growth.
He concluded that without a secure Nigeria, there can be no sustainable future, insisting that the safety of Nigerians must now take priority above all else.
