Former Kaduna Central Senator and human rights activist Shehu Sani has reacted to new statistics listing the top 10 oil-consuming countries in the world for 2024.
According to the data, the United States leads with a consumption of 9,948.95 TWh, followed closely by China with 8,964.05 TWh. India ranks third with 3,028.74 TWh, while Russia follows at 2,129.10 TWh. Other countries on the list include Saudi Arabia (2,048.46 TWh), Japan (1,782.89 TWh), South Korea (1,540.17 TWh), Brazil (1,427.73 TWh), Canada (1,209.20 TWh), and Germany (1,176.55 TWh).
Shehu Sani responded to the data via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he posted a photo of the statistics along with a brief, rhetorical comment: “So, we are not among the top biggest consumers?” His post appears to highlight Nigeria’s absence from the list despite being a major oil-producing country. The comment has sparked discussions online about Nigeria’s energy consumption patterns, infrastructure, and how the country manages its natural resources. Sani, known for his outspoken views, seemed to be pointing out the irony in the situation, possibly hinting at broader issues within Nigeria’s oil sector and economy.
