On June 3, 2025, Chidi Odinkalu, a prominent Nigerian lawyer and commentator, sparked a wave of reactions on X with a post questioning Peter Obi’s silence regarding Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s trip to Saudi Arabia.

This came amidst devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State, which claimed over 110 lives, as reported by PUNCH on May 30, 2025.

Odinkalu highlighted the expectation for politicians to show solidarity with suffering citizens and for opposition figures like Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to hold the government accountable during such crises.

Here is what he wrote on his official X handle

Reports from Daily Post and TheCable, published on June 2, 2025, confirmed Obi’s visit to Niger State, where he donated ₦20 million to flood victims and met with Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba.

Obi expressed sympathy and suggested exploring mitigation strategies for recurring floods, but he did not address Governor Bago’s absence, a point Odinkalu found significant.
