Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has dismissed Russia’s expectations that Ukraine should hand over the contested Donbas region, arguing that President Vladimir Putin has failed to secure the territory despite four years of full-scale war.
In a post shared on his verified Twitter account, Pompeo criticised Moscow’s demands as unrealistic and urged the international community not to yield to Russia’s pressure.
“In four years of war, Russia has not been able to take control of the highly strategic Donbas region—yet is demanding that Ukraine simply hand it over,” he wrote. “Putin can bluster all he wants, but he isn’t winning this war—and we shouldn’t let him.”
The former U.S. diplomat emphasised that rewarding Russia with territorial gains would not only undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty but also embolden authoritarian states worldwide. He argued that any settlement that involves conceding the Donbas would signal to aggressive powers that military force can successfully alter internationally recognised borders.
Pompeo also reiterated his long-standing position that the United States and its allies must maintain strong political, military, and economic support for Kyiv. He noted that Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian advances demonstrates both the resilience of its armed forces and the strategic importance of sustained Western assistance. View, More,
