In a recent statement via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Chidi Odinkalu, a law professor and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, has shared his reaction to a statement by Jibrin Okutepa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Okutepa’s statement focused on the influence of political elites on the judiciary, stating that only judges can truly free themselves from political pressure.

This statement comes as a result of growing concerns in Nigeria about the perceived control that political elites state over court rulings.

Odinkalu, who has been vocal about judicial independence, responded to Okutepa’s message and expressed appreciation for Okutepa’s stance, underlining his agreement, acknowledging the challenge faced by the judiciary in maintaining independence.

“Thank you, @jibrinSAN. There is not much that can be added or removed from this,” Odinkalu wrote.

The conversation around judicial independence has increased in Nigeria, with critics arguing that political pressure often compromises judicial integrity.

Many believe that political influence can lead to biased rulings that may not truly reflect justice, especially in cases involving prominent politicians.

Okutepa’s statement sheds light on the responsibilities of judges in maintaining fairness, by acknowledging that only judges themselves can free their profession from political influence, Okutepa implies that the judiciary must take deliberate steps to reinforce its independence and gain public trust.

Odinkalu’s endorsement of Okutepa’s message reflects his belief that this independence is crucial for the judiciary’s credibility.
