In an interview with Channels Television, Don Abednego, the Technical Adviser to the Bayelsa State Government on Communication and Strategy, addressed rising concerns over tensions between the state government and supporters of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. When asked whether Governor Douye Diri might declare Wike persona non grata in Bayelsa State following opposition to a planned pro-Wike rally, Abednego firmly dismissed the idea, focusing instead on the need for national unity and respect.
According to Abednego, the administration of Governor Diri holds no personal grudge against Wike, despite the growing political friction. He reiterated that the state government’s stance was solely to prevent political instability and ethnic tension in Bayelsa, especially considering the recent turmoil in Rivers State involving Wike and Governor Sim Fubara. Rather than escalating the situation, Abednego urged for calm and mutual respect across party and ethnic lines.
“No Nigerian has ever been treated that way. We can’t start with the FCT Minister, a distinguished member of the Executive Council of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We don’t have any personal problems with him. The interest of the Bayelsa State Government — and that should be the interest of Nigerians — is to ensure that there’s peace and tranquility in this country,” he said during the live interview.
