Dr. Usman Bugaje, a chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has urged Nigeria to stop the practice of rotational presidency, believing it has worsened the country’s socio-economic problems, during an interview with VANGUARD.
Bugaje suggested a different system and proposed a collegiate system where leadership is based on competence, knowledge, and character rather than regional considerations.
Bugaje argued that the focus on the North and South in politics is harmful.
He said the country needs leaders who can address its pressing issues, according to him, Nigeria is “sinking” because of divisive politics.
He stated that leadership should not be determined by regional balance but by merit.
He also criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), calling its governance a “disaster.”
He pointed out that the country’s challenges, including insecurity and economic decline, have worsened under the current government.
Bugaje highlighted the large landmass of the North compared to other regions, however, he insisted that geography should not dictate political arrangements.
Instead, he called for a shift in political discussions toward national development.
“I think the presidential ticket should not be clouded by this North and South thing. I think we have to prioritise knowledge, competence, courage and character. In fact, the most important thing is the character. Honestly, for me, yes, the North, in terms of size, is 78 per cent of the size of the country. The whole of the states of the North-East, you can put them in Niger and they will still have another space for the whole of the size of the North-East, and even there will be land remaining. Yes, that is it. This is geography,” he said.
