According to Channels TV, the Nigerian presidency has criticized UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch for her comments about Nigeria, calling them an attempt to gain favor within her party.

Badenoch had remarked that she does not want the UK to become like Nigeria, citing perceived government failures in the country.

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, accused Badenoch of using rhetoric to appeal to the right-wing base of her party.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, Bwala described her comments as counterproductive and unnecessary. He compared Badenoch’s approach to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has refrained from criticizing India despite issues in his country of origin.

“The problem with Kemi is the rhetoric,” Bwala said. “She is building a narrative of denigrating Nigeria to gain acceptance within her party. This is counterproductive. Leaders like Rishi Sunak, despite challenges in India, have not used such tactics to promote their political agendas.”

Bwala dismissed concerns that Badenoch’s statements could harm Nigeria’s international relations or investment opportunities. He noted that Badenoch is not part of the UK government, and her remarks would hold little sway in diplomatic or business dealings.

“She’s not in power, so her comments won’t affect government-to-government relationships,” he said. “Investors are smart enough to discern if her rhetoric is rooted in reality or political posturing.”

Bwala further argued that Badenoch’s Nigerian heritage makes her comments more damaging and urged her to adopt a more constructive approach.

This reaction follows a debate over Badenoch’s leadership and identity, with some questioning the value of her statements for Nigeria.

Despite the controversy, Bwala expressed confidence that Nigeria’s efforts to attract investors and foster international collaboration remain unaffected.
