Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has appealed to his supporters for forgiveness and reconciliation as he opened up about a pivotal meeting with his predecessor and political rival, Nyesom Wike. Speaking in a widely circulated video published by Symfoni TV, the governor made an emotional plea for unity, saying, “Please forgive me.”
The appeal came during a low-key event marking what would have been the second anniversary celebration of his administration — an occasion significantly dampened by the protracted political crisis that has gripped the state in recent months.
Addressing the crowd with unusual candor, Fubara acknowledged the pain and confusion many of his supporters had endured. “If there is something I have done that made you act the way you did, please forgive me too. Because already, me on my own, I’m forgiving you,” he said, referencing both political allies and opponents caught in the middle of the state’s turbulent leadership saga.
For the first time, Fubara also gave insight into the outcome of a private meeting with former governor and now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, suggesting that the dialogue — though difficult — was part of the process of mending fractured relationships. “Let me thank him here for that intervention. The intervention that has given us this opportunity to still address ourselves,” Fubara revealed, calling the meeting a turning point that allowed for renewed dialogue between himself, his deputy, and others.
The governor praised President Bola Tinubu for his role in diffusing tensions, stating, “Thank you, Mr. President. Because without him, protest wouldn’t solve the problem.”
While Fubara refrained from detailing the full agreement reached with Wike, his remarks hinted at a commitment to rebuilding bridges and restoring normalcy in the governance of Rivers State. He emphasized the importance of forgiveness, respect, and collective responsibility in moving forward.
“What is important is having a forgiving spirit… At the end, I can’t win alone. I need the support of everyone,” he said, calling for a renewed sense of purpose among political actors and the general public.
The governor’s heartfelt appeal has drawn mixed reactions across the state, with many lauding his humility while others await concrete signs of lasting peace and genuine reconciliation within the state’s fractured political landscape
