According to a report by the Punch on Monday, April 6, 2026, the Obidient Movement has reaffirmed its commitment to staging a nationwide protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission, insisting that preparations are ongoing despite growing political tension.

Speaking on the development, the National Coordinator of the movement worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, disclosed that while mobilisation efforts are in full swing, the group would not publicly disclose the date of the protest for security reasons.

He explained that “No, we cannot reveal the date now. We also know they are planning for us. Of course, INEC is our target,” indicating concerns about possible disruption or intimidation of participants.

Tanko maintained that the planned protest is driven by dissatisfaction with the electoral body’s recent actions, particularly decisions affecting opposition parties such as the African Democratic Congress. He accused the commission of overstepping its role and contributing to internal crises within political parties.

According to him, many Nigerians are increasingly frustrated and are ready to express their grievances through peaceful demonstrations. He emphasised that the movement’s objective is not conflict but to demand accountability and fairness from those in positions of authority.

The protest, tagged #OccupyINEC, was earlier announced as a nationwide action calling for sweeping reforms within the electoral commission, including demands for the resignation of its leadership over alleged bias and loss of public trust.

The situation has been further heightened by recent developments involving INEC’s decision not to recognise factions within the ADC, a move that has stirred political reactions and deepened concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Despite the tension, the movement insists the protest will remain peaceful and inclusive, urging Nigerians and civil society groups to participate in defending democratic principles and safeguarding the country’s electoral integrity. Read_More…
