Public affairs analyst Samuel Ajayi has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s recent political moves show signs of desperation ahead of the 2027 election, as reported by THE SUN.
According to him, no Nigerian president has started campaigning so early into a term.
Ajayi noted that Tinubu is using quiet but aggressive tactics, these include securing endorsements, winning over opposition members, and pushing the National Assembly to back him.
He also mentioned that Tinubu is trying to be declared the sole candidate of the APC.
Turning to Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Ajayi said many of Obi’s supporters are strongly against any coalition, they believe Obi should not be a running mate to anyone.
Yet, at the same time, they want him to find a powerful northern partner who can help him win votes in the North.
Ajayi believes this thinking is flawed, he said voters in the North do not always share the same views as those in the South.
He also addressed talks about possible running mates, some have suggested Governor Zulum of Borno State, but Ajayi dismissed his influence outside Borno.
He said Nasir El-Rufai has more political weight across the North.
Despite the pressure from his followers, Ajayi said Obi is making smart political moves behind the scenes.
Ajayi stressed that politics is not about emotions but about numbers.
“For obvious reasons, many of Obi’s supporters do not want him to be a running mate to anyone. In fact, some of them do not even want him to enter into an alliance or coalition at all. Yet, they want him to pick a strong northern figure as running mate who will sell him in the core North. The belief among many Obi supporters is that he is better than any other candidate in the 2027 presidential race. I always laugh. Let’s assume we are guaranteed a free and fair election. An average northern voter does not reason like those of us in the South. What informs his electoral decision is different from yours and mine. Know this, know peace,” he said.
