A media aide to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has responded sharply to a controversial statement made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who recently declared that “by 2027, there will be nothing like political parties.” The comment, which surfaced via a viral video shared on X and reported by PUNCH, has sparked concern across the political spectrum.
Reacting via a post on X, Obi’s media aide, Tai Obasi, described the Senate President’s statement as “reckless and anti-democratic,” warning that it sends a dangerous message to the Nigerian electorate and undermines the nation’s constitutional democracy.
“Such a declaration from the number three citizen is not only shocking but alarming. What does he mean there will be no political parties? Is he suggesting a one-party state or the collapse of democratic competition?” Obasi queried.
Akpabio made the statement at a political event in Akwa Ibom, where he boasted that the dominance of the ruling party would be so absolute by 2027 that opposition parties would cease to exist. The statement has drawn swift condemnation from opposition figures, legal experts, and civil society groups.
Obasi emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy thrives on political pluralism and warned that any attempt to silence opposition voices would be resisted.
“Power belongs to the people, not to any single party or politician,” he wrote.
As the country inches closer to the 2027 general elections, Akpabio’s comment has ignited fresh debate about the future of Nigeria’s multi-party system and the role of political tolerance in sustaining democracy.
