In a recent interview with The Honest Bunch Podcast, Isaac Fayose, the younger brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, explained why Peter Obi left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the 2023 elections. According to him, Obi’s exit was heavily influenced by the actions of Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State.
Fayose said that during the lead-up to the PDP primaries, Wike was strongly pushing to get the party’s presidential ticket. “Peter Obi left PDP because of Wike. Wike was trying to get the party ticket,” he said.
At the same time, other top politicians like Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, and Peter Obi were also interested. However, Wike’s behavior made Obi feel uncomfortable. Fayose claimed that Obi believed something shady might happen during the primaries, so he decided to leave the party.
He also criticized Atiku Abubakar for contesting again, saying it was unfair for another northerner to take over after President Buhari, who is also from the North. Fayose felt it was the South’s turn to produce the next president. He added that PDP would have had a better chance against Bola Ahmed Tinubu if it had chosen a southern candidate.
Although Peter Obi eventually joined the Labour Party and ran for president, Fayose still believes the PDP is not completely broken. According to him, the party remains strong despite the issues caused by leadership decisions and internal struggles.
