According to a report by The Sun on July 28, 2025, Bolaji Abdullahi, the interim national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has claimed that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is strategically avoiding a return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because he believes the party is under the control of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abdullahi made the revelation during an appearance on Prime Time, an Arise Television programme, where he discussed the future of the ADC and its role in Nigeria’s political coalition landscape.
According to him, despite public speculation, Obi remains within the fold of the coalition and is fully aware of the dangers of rejoining a party allegedly compromised by the ruling APC.
“Peter is in the coalition regardless of what anybody is saying,” Abdullahi declared. “Everyone knows that the jugular of PDP is still in the hands of the ruling party.
Peter Obi, more than anyone else, knows that he cannot take the risk of going to the PDP.”
The statement has raised eyebrows within political circles, especially among PDP loyalists and analysts who see it as a direct accusation of political puppeteering within one of Nigeria’s largest opposition parties.
Abdullahi’s remark suggests that Obi’s continued distance from the PDP is not just ideological, but also tactical — a decision to avoid walking into a trap.
Abdullahi went further to clarify that the ADC is still in its formative stage and has not begun internal deliberations on who would fly the party’s presidential flag in the next general election.
