Political Analyst Dr. Yusuf Aaron has sparked debate with his critique of Nigeria’s opposition leaders, particularly targeting Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

According to a TVC News interview from 6:00, Dr. Aaron expressed concerns about Obi’s tenure as Anambra State governor, suggesting that unresolved questions linger about his two-term leadership.

He argued that many opposition figures, including Obi, lack ideological grounding and are driven primarily by self-interest rather than a coherent vision for governance.

Dr. Aaron emphasized that opposition leaders are often motivated by personal ambition rather than a commitment to principled politics.

He contrasted this with the approach of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who, during his time as an opposition leader, demonstrated remarkable tenacity.

According to Dr. Aaron, Tinubu prioritized party unity and cohesion, even sacrificing his own ambitions to strengthen the All Progressives Congress (APC) before his eventual rise to the presidency in 2023.

This strategic discipline, Dr. Aaron suggested, is a model opposition figures should emulate to build a credible and united front.

In his words, “Look at Peter Obi, he is somebody whom there are still questions about how he ruled Anambra state for two terms. So most of these people in opposition, they are not there based on ideology, they are just there based on their self-interest. And if they want to work in opposition, they should look at how the tenacity of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, when he was in opposition, how he was able to sacrifice his ambition to ensure that there was unity and cohesion in the party.”
