A leading figure in the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Sani has said that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains the most reliable choice for the North ahead of the 2027 presidential election due to his constitutionally limited tenure.
In an interview on Trust TV, Sani argued that Jonathan’s legal restriction to a single term offers the North a more secure arrangement compared to other southern aspirants who may or may not honor verbal power-sharing agreements.
“This one is compelled by the law, he does not need to make any promise. He has to go after 4 years,” Sani said. “This one is making a promise. A promise can be kept or may not be kept either way, but in this one, you are sure that it must be kept. So for the North, I think Goodluck Jonathan is the best choice.”
According to Sani, this legal certainty makes Jonathan a more strategic candidate for the North as it would ensure a quicker return of power to the region, compared to supporting a southern candidate with the potential for an eight-year tenure.
He noted that while many aspirants may pledge to serve only one term, those promises are not binding and can be broken. Jonathan, on the other hand, is bound by the constitution to serve only one more term, having previously completed the term of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and won re-election in 2011.
Though Goodluck Jonathan has remained largely silent on 2027 ambitions, his name continues to spark political interest, especially among those advocating for power rotation and national cohesion.
Sani’s endorsement adds another layer to the PDP’s internal dialogue as it looks to rebuild and strategize ahead of the next election cycle.
