The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has recounted how he declined to support Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election.
While speaking during a media chat aired by News Central TV from 1:15:22, Wike explained that when he was approached to support Peter Obi, he refused. He said he told those who reached out to him that even if they supported Obi, the Labour Party candidate still would not stand a good chance of winning the election.
Wike further criticized some PDP leaders who accused him of anti-party activities due to his decision to support Tinubu. He challenged them to state the number of governors, senators, or House of Assembly members they were able to produce during the election.
Wike also revealed that Olabode George, a chieftain of the PDP, supported the Labour Party. He said he personally decided not to take that route because he did not see a realistic chance for Obi to win.
According to Wike, some southern leaders had agreed that the presidency should return to the South, and that everyone was free to support any candidate from the region. He said his decision was a calculated political move based on the realities on the ground.
“Olabode George supported the Labour Party, but I said, ‘I would not support it, there is no likelihood that he (Obi) had the chance to win the election.’ I said, ‘No, I won’t do that, even if we support him, this man can’t win the election. Forget about the sentiments, it will not work.’ Olabode George and some of us said everybody would have to support a southern candidate. We all agreed. What is the offense that I have committed? That I supported Bola Tinubu under the APC?”
