According to a report by Premium Times on Monday, July 28, 2025, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former Governor of Anambra State, has donated N25 million to the Dominican Sisters’ College in Abatete, Anambra State. The donation was made during the foundation-laying ceremony for a new male hostel at the school.

The Dominican Sisters’ College is a secondary school run by the Dominican Sisters of the Sienna Congregation. Speaking during the event, Obi highlighted the importance of investing in education, describing it as the most effective way to foster long-term development and reduce poverty.

“This contribution is part of my commitment to supporting institutions that focus on raising responsible and educated citizens,” Obi said. “Back when I was governor, I facilitated the construction of a female hostel here to ensure a safer and more conducive learning environment for our girls. Today, I am proud to begin work on the boys’ hostel with this donation.”

He emphasized that true national progress can only be achieved through deliberate investment in sectors like education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. According to him, these areas serve as the foundation for peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.

Obi’s support for educational institutions has been consistent in recent weeks. Just days earlier, he and his classmates from Christ the King College, Onitsha, jointly contributed N50 million towards the school’s infrastructure upgrade. Similarly, he donated N15 million to the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State.

In a related intervention, Obi gave N20 million to the University of Calabar to support the Faculty of Dentistry, which had been struggling with limited equipment. The donation came in response to concerns raised by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, which had drastically reduced the number of approved admissions due to inadequate facilities. The development had sparked tension within the university community, with students resisting proposed transfers to other institutions.
