Pat Utomi, a former presidential candidate and professor of political economy, has revealed that influential figures around Muhammadu Buhari announced Abba Kyari’s appointment as Chief of Staff without the former president’s knowledge, forcing him to accept it under pressure.
He made this disclosure during an interview with News Central TV while reflecting on how Buhari’s administration deviated from its original agenda. Utomi said the vision for Buhari’s government collapsed because of internal sabotage.
He explained that while he and other progressives worked on a roadmap for national development, those who disliked the agenda hijacked Buhari immediately after the election.
According to him, Abba Kyari, who initially opposed Buhari and even vowed to leave the country if he became president, was imposed as Chief of Staff by individuals who had undue influence over Buhari.
He stated that Buhari’s weak leadership created room for such manipulation, and within weeks of assuming office, the administration began to show signs that alarmed those who had worked tirelessly to develop the agenda.
Utomi added that once Kyari and his allies gained control, the original team was sidelined, and the presidency took a direction that eventually disappointed many Nigerians.
In his words, “This is a famous story that I won’t be able to give the details of how Abba Kyari, who opposed Buhari, in fact, said to somebody I know very well that if Buhari became president, he would leave the country, that Buhari was a serial loser.”
“Some people who had influence on Buhari got together without Buhari knowing, announced Abba Kyari’s appointment as chief of staff. And Buhari was pressured into having to accept it.”
“That’s where the trouble started. So all those who worked on the agenda were suddenly out of the picture. These guys who hated the agenda took hold of this man and his presidency.”
