The Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Prof. Godfrey Onah, has spoken out strongly against the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, stating that many people in government are not protecting lives and properties, instead, they only send holiday greetings like “Happy Easter” as reported by DAILY POST.

Bishop Onah made these statements during his Easter sermon at St. Theresa’s Cathedral in Nsukka, Enugu State.

He compared the suffering of Christians in Nigeria to the suffering of Jesus Christ during the crucifixion.

He said Christians in Nigeria are being attacked, killed, and churches are burned, yet the attackers are not arrested or punished.

According to him, this shows that the faith of Christians is not respected by those in power.

He also criticized the takeover of mission schools by the government.

He said this action has ruined the quality of education and destroyed values.

He blamed the government for turning these schools into places where students no longer learn morals or proper knowledge.

Onah expressed frustration that Christians are being targeted, while the authorities do little to stop it.

He said when Christians try to defend themselves, they are blamed, however, when criminals kill or destroy, nothing is done.

He accused the government, police, army, and other security agencies of reacting only when the attackers are harmed, but staying silent when innocent Christians are killed.

He said this is unfair and called it “pure provocation.”

The bishop warned that Nigeria is heading into darkness if these issues are not addressed.

He told the government officials to stop giving empty Easter greetings and start doing their jobs to protect the people.

He added that both Christians and all Nigerians must learn to act differently.

“Who knows how many Christians have been killed in this country because they are Christians, some right inside the church?

“Many of them will go online in television and their official handles, social media handles to wish Nigerians, especially Christians, Happy Easter.”

“Oga, keep your wish. Don’t wish me happy Easter. Protect my life. Don’t wish me happy Easter. Do your job. Because this cloud that is gathering, this darkness that is gathering, if it is allowed, to extinguish the light of faith of Christians this country will be launched into total darkness. And successive governments that have stood idly by and watched while this is happening should only blame themselves and not any other person, If anything like that happens,” he said.
