In an interview with Arise News, lawyer and public affairs analyst Liborous Oshoma criticized the politicization of the recent killings of Northerners in Uromi, Edo State. He argued that security issues should be handled with caution rather than being used for political leverage. Oshoma also noted the contrasting reactions to different security incidents across the country, emphasizing the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing security threats.
Explaining his position, Oshoma acknowledged the concerns of those who believe justice should be served but warned against turning the tragedy into a political battle. He pointed out that while some are outraged over the arrests of suspects in the Uromi killings, others are still aggrieved over the unresolved murder of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto, where no arrests were made. He stressed that justice should be upheld in all cases, regardless of the victims’ backgrounds. Additionally, he urged the government not only to apprehend those responsible but also to investigate the root causes of such incidents to prevent further occurrences.
“The idea of trying to play politics with it because I’ve also listened to the other side playing politics with it, giving ultimatum. That’s not how to handle security situations, that’s not how to handle security challenges. Some people are also angry that 14 persons have been arrested, that when Deborah was killed in Sokoto, that till date, nobody was arrested and there was no response.”

“That issue of Deborah, whether it’s one person or ten, we should all condemn it. With this scenario, I’d advise the government, not just say go after the perpetrators, also find out what’s leading because it has happened in Uromi today. What’s the guarantee that tomorrow there are no other persons also travelling from Osogbo to wherever with guns and ammunitions in trucks under questionable circumstance,” Oshoma said.
