Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives aspirant, Bolanle Aminat Sarumi-Aliyu (BASA), has revealed how delegates demanded huge sums of money from her ahead of the party’s primaries, insisting she rejected the offer because of her commitment to ending money politics.

Speaking in an interview Edmund Obilo, BASA disclosed that just three days before the primaries, some delegates approached her with a request for payment in exchange for their votes. “Three days to the primaries I had some delegates ringing me up. They said, ‘BASA, you will pay for this thing.’ I said, ‘Pay for what?’ They said, ‘So they pay for primaries.’ I said really, how much is the going rate for these primaries? They said ₦1 million. I said, ‘You and who? 1 million per what?’ They said 1 million per vote. Forget it. Per delegate. And there’s 36 delegates. I wasn’t going to pay that because my mission is to end money politics,” she recounted.

Sarumi-Aliyu emphasized that her refusal to buy votes was rooted in her belief that politics should be inclusive and not reserved for the wealthy. “I am passionate about it. On a more serious note, if I do not end money politics, please tell me which forganizer’s child can emerge as a candidate for rep if you have to pay 1 million per delegate to vote for you,” she stressed.
