According to a report by Vanguard Newspapers on Monday, December 8, 2025, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that he and other founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party will not allow individuals who recently joined the party from other political groups to weaken or destroy it.
He made it clear that long-standing members are determined to protect the identity, structure, and values of the party, especially at a time when internal discipline and unity are being tested.
According to him, the survival of the party depends on respect for its foundation and internal rules.
He also criticized a faction within the party for what he described as disregard for court judgments.
Wike expressed concern that the group conducted a convention despite existing court rulings on the matter.
He stressed that political parties must respect judicial decisions if they want to regain the trust and confidence of the public.
He warned that failure to follow lawful processes would continue to damage the credibility of the party in the eyes of Nigerians.
The minister made these remarks during the 104th National Executive Committee meeting of the party, which took place at his official residence in Abuja.
During the meeting, he explained that the disputed convention went ahead even though there were clear and binding judgments from the Federal High Court.
Wike stated that after holding the convention, the same faction went to a State High Court to seek recognition, despite the existence of earlier rulings.
He said this move created confusion within the party and raised serious legal and procedural questions.
He said instead of addressing the issues raised by the courts, the group returned to seek further validation from another court, creating what he described as unnecessary legal battles.
He further questioned the actions of the group, pointing out the contradiction in their approach.
He explained that if the electoral body had already recognised the faction, there would be no need to seek further approval from the courts.
He insisted that the party must return to strict obedience of court judgments and internal regulations to restore order, stability, and proper leadership without undermining democratic principles.
He said, “You had the convention without obeying the court, and now you are back asking a Federal High Court to recognize you. If INEC already recognizes you, what exactly are you going to court for?.” View, More,
