Former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has strongly criticized the defection of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and other key figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Saraki described Okowa’s move as “unbecoming and shocking,” noting that it sets a concerning precedent for a running mate of a major party’s presidential candidate to switch allegiance to the ruling party.

According to Saraki, Okowa’s defection reflects the ongoing erosion of leadership values in Nigeria’s political landscape. However, he urged PDP members not to be demoralized, emphasizing that the party is undergoing a “rebirth.” Saraki suggested that those who no longer believe in the party’s ideals should leave, allowing loyal and committed members to refocus on rebuilding a vibrant opposition.

Saraki stressed the importance of a strong alternative to the ruling party, arguing that democracy cannot thrive in a one-party state. He expressed confidence in the PDP’s future, encouraging members to stay focused and committed rather than blaming the ruling party for the current situation.

Saraki likened the journey of rebuilding to a marathon, not a sprint, and assured PDP members that with strategic planning and unity, the party will emerge stronger from this setback. He urged members to look forward to future elections, emphasizing the PDP’s capacity to bounce back and win. Saraki’s comments highlight the challenges facing the PDP and the need for the party to regroup and refocus its efforts.
